Flute Story

Flutes have been around, in one form or another, for a very long time.  So long, in fact, that they are thought to be the very first of the wind instrument family. The oldest, which was found in the Swabian Alb region of Germany is said to be a staggering 43,000 years old!

Originally, it is thought, that flutes were played during hunting sessions to lure prey and also during religious ceremonies.

The earliest known flutes were made of bone and later they came to be made of wood and bamboo.

They have gone through so many different incarnations over the centuries that one could certainly house a sizeable exhibition to show off the many different sizes and types that have passed off as flutes throughout the ages.

In the nineteenth century however, the design of the flute underwent some very marked changes due to the innervations of a man called Theobald Boehim.

In fact this man was the creator of our western style finger hole flute.

Now of course, things have progressed so much that we can find many different types of flutes, from the Pan Pipes of South America to the haunting tones of a Japanese Flute.

The range of tones also is now very impressive going from the large and deep base Flute, through alto, concert and to Piccolo.

The flute is a versatile instrument that has been part of human culture for a very long time.
